The Difference Between Simply Pharmacy and a No-Prescription Pharmacy

There are quite a few online pharmacies where no prescription is needed to get what would normally be a prescription-only medication. So, is this the ultimate in consumer convenience ... or a terrible scam? Here we look at the difference between Simply Pharmacy's online chemist model, and the no-prescription pharmacy that is popping up here and there online.

How do no-prescription pharmacies work?
In some countries, a prescription may not be legally required to obtain some drugs. These no-prescription pharmacies might offer to ship internationally to you in Australia. However, there are obvious quarantine and customs issues to deal with in this case.

Sometimes an Australian online pharmacy requires no prescription. These can only legally operate if they offer you an online consultation, and issue you with a valid prescription written by a real doctor - which will most likely be kept on file at the no-prescription pharmacy, so you can't have it filled elsewhere.

Why doesn’t Simply Pharmacy act as a No-Prescription Pharmacy?
The National Prescribing Service recommends, and we feel that it isn't in our customers' best interests, to supply you with drugs following an online consultation, as no-prescription pharmacies do. This is because:

  • It is an expensive model: No-prescription pharmacies charge much more than the cost of the drugs themselves added to the cost of a consultation. You get no Medicare rebate on the consultation, and no concession rates are offered. For example, 30 tablets of Xanax would cost no more than $20.11 currently under the PBS. No-prescription pharmacies charge around $130.
  • The number of drugs that can be supplied is limited: Only drugs that don't require physical checks like blood pressure/glucose can be supplied over the internet. Simply Pharmacy sells over 1500 prescription medications, no-prescription pharmacies will offer only around 100.
  • It is subject to exploitation: All drugs have side effects and are intended only for use in treating a real condition. However, running an online pharmacy where no prescription is needed makes drugs much more open to exploitation.

It is not only expensive to buy from an online pharmacy where no prescription is needed, but it could endanger your life. Simply Pharmacy's care for our customers prevents us from becoming a no-prescription pharmacy.
